Preamble | Mouse On Mars

Mouse on Mars is one of the few electronic bands to stand the test of time. Constantly reinventing themselves, they have taken electronica to new heights with a unique blend of sound annihilation, fragmented melodies and an impassioned hatred of conformity.

For nearly two deacades, Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner have sweated over burning consoles to create a new musical language, only to twist it again into thousands of myriad distortions. Before their appearance at CDR Berlin on October 10th, we shared words.

When and where did you first attend or hear about CDR?

We heard about it from Berlin muscian friends. never attended it ourselves though. Looking forward to come by!

What will you be bringing to CDR Berlin when you represent at Prince Charles on October 10th?

We'll improvise. We'll speak about our musical approach and show a few things we're doing with laptops. Will also pre-premiere our iPhone app "wretchup", which we never presented in public yet.

Now 2013 is entering its final quarter, is there a song/album shaping up as your track(s) of the year?

Most of the stuff the Teklife crew has been producing this year. Small But Hard was the most interesting label in 2013. Also loved the artwork and approach of the first two infinite greyscale 10"s which just came out. And of course Jan's Fiepblatter series on Thrill Jockey.

Who/What has also been on heavy rotation on your audio player of late?

Kyari Pamyu Pamyu, Iancu Dumitrescu, Snort Gimlet, DJ Rashad, Deef, Cid Rim

Please talk us through the track you last [cmd] ‘S’d ? ([ctrl] ‘S’ to PC users) [in other words, last project you saved]

Just saved our new EP, Spezmodia. Monkeytown will release it in January as the first of a few releases to celebrate our 21st birthday.

Finally, have you any advice or words of warning for producers/musicians developing musical works in progress to play at CDR?

Forget everything you heard when you make your own music but make sure there really is something to forget. In other words, never stop studying, learning, being curious but find a way to leave all this behind when you realize your own sound.
