Zar announces the release of his ‘Light Stain At Dawn’ EP
Expect to undergo a sonic journey from club-ready, bass-laden goodness to the euphonic incorporation of guitar, bansuri, harmonium & strings in Zar's productions. 'Light Stain At Dawn' releases on the CDR label, Fri 28 March.
Today marks the release of emerging artist Zar's debut single 'Deph', announcing his impressive forthcoming EP, ‘Light Stain at Dawn’ with his bubbling, club-ready roller ‘Deph’.
“This is the first single off of Light Stain at Dawn, the most club leaning track which started its life as a sketch whilst on the tube to work. It was an experiment to try to build a melodic motif by only using samples taken from the Hanibach samples of really strange vintage synths; that’s why the song sounds so dusty and quite mechanical overall. It also represents the part of the journey of experiencing uncomfortable emotions where you push them aside and don’t want to deal with them.”
Affiliated with DAYTIMERS and Rhythm Section, this EP sees Zar step out on his own across five tracks focused on the middle ground between functional club music structures and traditional instrumentation.
Ambition is the name of the game here – though it doesn’t take long to realise Zar has the chops to pull it off. Following a short intro, ‘Slip’ sets out his stall: live guitar, bansuri, harmonium & strings working in tandem with a house beat across an eleven-minute epic. The EP’s lead single ‘Deph’ strips things down for the most DJ-friendly track here before title track ‘Light Stain at Dawn’ lets the live strings stretch out and take centre-stage. Finally, ‘Peace to All Mankind’ closes things on a bittersweet piano loop and chopped samples – proof that for all that the live instruments on this EP soar, sometimes nothing beats the scissors tool.
There’s also a remix by Suchi, whose remix of ‘Deph’ takes the track somewhere subterranean with a growling bassline and staccato keys.
Stream 'Deph' and pre-save the EP. Zar celebrates his forthcoming EP with a launch party at The Standard, London on 21st March - find your tickets here, it's free to RSVP. Find out more about Pathways here.

Keep up to date on all things CDR
Since we started back in 2001, CDR has been all about community, creating spaces for people to connect and develop through music.
Back in the Plastic People days, you could fit all of us in one small room around one soundsystem. Today, our projects and programmes extend from the dancefloor to schools, youth centres, as well as grassroots clubs and venues across the country and further afield. But in challenging times, with grassroots organisations like ours closing all around us, every bit of support counts.
Your help will enable us to continue delivering music programmes and events in the UK to the people who need it most. Our mission is simple: to build an equitable music ecosystem for producers and artists.
